Canadian-grown produce.

May 24, 2025With a relatively short growing season due to its northern climate, buying Canadian grown produce is challenging especially during the winter months. But there are no excuses to not shop local during the warmer growing spring and summer months when produce is in abundant supply. Produce peaks during the summer and early fall months. Buying local produce offers numerous benefits, starting with freshness and flavor. Because local fruits and vegetables are typically harvested at their peak ripeness and transported shorter distances, they reach consumers quickly and retain more nutrients and taste. Unlike imported produce, which may spend days or weeks in transit and storage, local food is often sold within 24 to 48 hours of being picked. This freshness contributes to better quality meals and a more enjoyable eating experience, encouraging healthier eating habits.

Canadian made produce is in abundance during the warmer months of the year.

Another major advantage of choosing local produce is the positive impact on the local economy and farming community. When consumers buy directly from nearby farmers or local markets, more money stays in the community. This supports small-scale agriculture, helps sustain family farms, and creates local jobs in farming, distribution, and retail. Additionally, shorter supply chains reduce transportation emissions, making local food a more environmentally responsible choice.
